Kolaco Solutions: Setting a Domino Server for Mail, applications and eCommerce
Objective
To set up a Notes/Domino Server for a small company to allow the user of mail, central storage document libraries and web site content and maintenance.

Need Identified
The company had 8 people using individual PC's networked using Windows for Workgroups and personal internet accounts foor internal connectivity and external email. With a Windows for Workgroups set up all user files are generally stored on each local PC, with sharing the folder, others on the network can access that file. This is okay for limited situations. The issues the company faced was how to allow the disconnected laptop user access to files without having to dial in each time, internal email with company domain name, web site content management and maintenance and ability to receive orders over the web and allow customers to track the status of their orders. Cost was a concern.

Solution
We implemented a Lotus Notes Network with a single Notes/Domino Server to allow the server to act as an email server, an application server and a web server. By using a single server we allowed the company to save money on a single server and actually spend a little more on the one server to get a higher quality machine. They we used NT security to lock down some of drives to free them up from the web, and then using Domino security to manage the security of the web site databases. The following was a list of implementation steps for this installation:
  • Develop the set up, configuration and implementation plan.
  • Set up Windows NT and Lotus Notes Server on server and configure and test.
  • Create all user ids.
  • Set up NT security and Configure Domino for the Web.
  • Set up Lotus Notes SMTP MTA server and connect to internet.
  • Set up Notes workstations, configure and test connectivity.
  • Build applications for internal use as well as internet web site.
  • Train the users.

We recommend that a company use a separate web server and a separate application/mail server, so that if an internal application goes bad or crashes, it does not affect the availability of the web site. For the same reason we often recommend a mail server that is separate from the applications server. But in this instance with the traffic light and the cost a concern, it was the best way for this company to go.

Benefits

  • Networked connectivity with a server for central storage of shared files.
  • Internet email for each employee with the company name as domain name.
  • Web site with ease of using Domino to maintain content.
  • Ability to receive and allow customers to track order status on the web.

TimeFrame
Basic Web Site Applications were developed in one month.
The implementation of the server and mail connectivity was accomplished in less than a week.
